Parents deceased and left $20k in debt with state?

Both parents have passed away unexpectedly lately, and left my sister and I with a very old home on 6 acres in California. We suddenly began recieving bills from Medi cal stating we owed them almost $20 and to remit payment in enclosed stamped envelope! We havent gone thru probate yet, and dont know if it's worth keeping the home at this point. Do we have to pay Medical anyway, or only if we get the home in our name? What happens to that debt if we take on the house v.s. if we do not?
